2006 Jr. World Bassmasters Classic

02/17/2006 - Day One

Awesome is one word to describe the trip to the 2006 Jr. World Bassmasters Classic, but there is also unforgettable.  If you are a kid that aspires to fish to pay his bills one day, or a grown man, and you get the opportunity to fish with the world's top 50 anglers, that is certainly an unforgettable trip to Kissimmee, Florida.

The week was busy for me, trash day is on Wednesday around my house and I "forgot" to take it out.  Mom let is "slide" this time, since I was in a mind set a little out of the norm.  I had to take all of my 6 weeks test on Thursday since I would be on an airplane on Friday morning headed to Orlando International.  I also had to run 3 miles to make up for the track practices I would be missing, pack and think strategy for a lake I had never fished before.  No pressure.

Friday afternoon we registered for the tournament and received a lot of "stuff" from product sponsors.  We were given hats, t-shirts, a blanket with the BASS logo on it (they came in handy on Sunday when the cold front moved in), life jackets, lures, tackle boxes, worms and other "stuff".  Christmas came early!  Next we were off to orientation and a banquet dinner with the world's top 50 anglers and their families.

At the banquet that night we ate dinner with the pros.  We had some kind of Italian chicken and lasagna, with green beans, I think.  We didn't care what we were eating, all we wanted to do was take pictures, get autographs and shake these guy's hands.  We had been turned loose in a candy store.  Ray Scott, the founder of BASS was one of the guest speakers, along with Kevin VanDam, the 2005 Classic Champion.

There are two age groups that compete in the Jr. Classic, 11-14 year olds and 15 - 18 year olds.  There is one angler from each age group and a pro angler in each boat.  The pro angler that we fished with was Ish Monroe.  Ish was knowledgeable and fun.  He loves to fish for anything.  That's what its all about, loving the sport and learning from it.  Thank you Ish, I enjoyed it and I hope to compete against you some day!

Bedtime came early.  That 4:30 wake up call came earlier!
